Spears' latest podcast reviews.

Speaker 2:

Hello, lovelies, and welcome to One Good Thing Media, your premier review channel for eclectic listeners. My name is Gerald Spear and I am the host and creator of our podcast. Today we're concluding our summer listening series that thus far has shared more than 20 podcasts to help you live your summer life out loud. We'll be sharing a trio of summer listening escapes. My latest binge-worthy find, as well as mystery and, would you believe, travel advice by the CIA the undercover agency that plays spy versus spy all over the planet. Agency that plays spy versus spy all over the planet For my family.

Speaker 2:

Exploring nature, sightseeing and tasting regional dishes are in our near future. We're hitting the road with our cute little red Winnebago trailer and we are going to be exploring more of the southwest. As such, we are going to be dark. The last two weeks in August we also promised that we were going to be going on vacation news-free, so wish us luck on that one. I wonder how many days on the road we're going to be out. Before both of us cave, let's dive into some news updates and highlights. Are you ready?

Speaker 2:

Spider-man, avengers, black Panther, iron man, captain America, doctor Strange and more than a dozen other memorable characters that young and even older moviegoers flock to theaters to get their superhero fix. Marvel movies may be filmed in color, but their messages are black and white good and evil and with very few shades of gray in between. It's no surprise that there are at least a dozen Marvel podcasts currently hosted by ride-or-die fans, so why am I about to welcome one more? Listen up, and I'm pretty sure that once you hear what I have to say, you are going to be just as enthusiastic as I am.

Speaker 2:

My first bit of news is about the launch of the official Marvel podcast. Buy Marvel, the American superhero entertainment company owned by Disney. Unlike other Marvel podcasts that are hosted by enthusiasts who can talk about Marvel all day without coming up for air, the official Marvel podcast dishes out insider information, including juicy bits of info about upcoming releases, what happened behind the scenes and many more bits of information you won't hear anywhere else. The official Marvel podcast also features discussions with the directors, producers and actors who are directly tied to their top projects, including the new Deadpool and Wolverine movie. Here's a clip from their trailer Wolverine movie.

Speaker 4:

Here's a clip from their trailer. Dive into the Marvel Universe for the latest news interviews, character deep dives and exclusive surprises on the official Marvel Podcast. With access, you can only get from inside the house of ideas. Listen to Marvel's stars and creators talk about what's coming up next in comics, games, movies, tv and more, featuring interviews with marvel studios, kevin feige. But if you want the real answer, if we're trying to get real on this podcast, marvel comics editor in chief, cb sabulski, every day it's exhilarating and it's terrifying. And Marvel's mightiest creators.

Speaker 1:

Those are the details that I grew up and continue to love as an adult.

Speaker 4:

Join us each week to celebrate the legacy of your favorite Marvel adventures and characters. I think this show's going to be a real treat, whether you're a lifelong fan or brand new to Marvel. The official Marvel podcast Listen every Wednesday beginning June 26 26. Wherever you listen to podcasts, you become part of a bigger universe. You just don't know it yet.

Speaker 2:

As I mentioned at the beginning of this news bit, there are many Marvel podcasts. Some of them are even named Official Marvel Podcast, so make sure that you follow the Official Marvel Podcast by Marvel. The other ones, by the way, are really worthwhile, but this one has such an insider feel to it. My next highlight is about the CIA. Are you planning to travel abroad this summer? If you are, or even if you're going to be doing road trips or flying around the country domestically, here's some information that you should have.

Speaker 2:

While searching shows that I thought I might want to feature. In episode 28, which was about island paradises, I discovered an island named Koh Tao, k-o-h-t-a-o in Thailand, and it looked so beautiful that I had to know more about it. I read several reviews of the island that were primarily from tourists and travel agencies and, to tell you the truth, I've done a lot of traveling in my day and I've always been skeptical about these types of reviews, because tourists often have an agenda, namely sponsorships, and all travel agency reviews can be both informative and misleading at the same time. So I dug a little deeper Kotow, kotow. I quickly discovered that Kotow's nickname was Murder Island. Hmm, right below an article about dozens of missing tourists, the CIA website popped up. To make a long story short, I eventually landed on the CIA podcast. Did you know they had one? I didn't. It's called the Langley Files, discreetly nestled between several episodes like the Side of the Argo Mission You've Never Heard, or A Conversation File 010, cia Travel Safety 101, that features a CIA security expert, and the information contained in that 33-minute episode proved to be invaluable for me and for all citizens when traveling abroad or, in some instances, even domestically. Some examples include why you should never accept a hotel room above the sixth floor and the importance of giving a photocopy of your passport to someone you trust before leaving the country. They also include important links on where you should go to get more information One is Ask Molly on travel, and that's on the CIA website and how you can register with the State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. There's also a link to the CIA World Travel Facts that includes the current safety status of anywhere you intend to travel in the world.

Speaker 2:

Gerald, oh, no, not you again, what are you listening to? Are you spying on me? Oh, ais, you can't trust them. But yes, welcome to. What Are you Listening To? A segment where I share what I've binged. This week.

Speaker 2:

In episode 27 of One Good Thing Media, we covered family-friendly podcasts that were sure to entertain your kids during long road trips and preserve adult sanity. This week I binged several episodes of we're Alive, scout's Honor by Weyland Productions and definitely want to add it to my family-friendly recommendations. Weyland Productions and definitely want to add it to my family-friendly recommendations. The one thing that's different is that Scout's Honor is for tweens and teens, as opposed to younger children. Scout's Honor is actually a mini-series by Weyland Productions, which has produced a separate we're Alive podcast with similar themes for mature teens and adults.

Speaker 2:

Scouts Honor is being heralded as a cross between Lord of the Flies and Invasion of the Zombies, which sounds compelling but not altogether accurate. It's really a story about a group of venture scouts who are trying to survive a brutal zombie invasion on Santa Catalina Island that's located just a few miles off the coast of Southern California. To do this, they have to use their camaraderie, cooperation and scout training to avoid the same fate that befell other Venture Scouts that are now hunting them. I'm currently listening to episode 5 of 8, and thus far it has been somewhat gory, but also a pulse-pounding ride. The zombies are merciless. Most of them are fast on their feet and work as a team to hunt, kill and sometimes convert humans into their own kind. Right now, my favorite characters are Ruby and Franklin although that could change at any time and I'm also hoping that all the kids make it out alive.

Speaker 2:

This podcast is suitable, in my estimation, for the 12 and over crowd. I recommend that all parents review the podcast first and then decide whether it's appropriate for their children. I'm going to play a clip for you, but please remember this is not suitable for young children. The clip takes place about midway through the podcast, when a band of zombies who were former friends and venture scouts of our group tracked them down and were getting ready to attack them. Our group was totally outnumbered, but they were very resourceful. Our scouts actually lured them over a steep hillside where the zombies fell down and became impaled in cactus, which abounds on Catalina Island. This takes place right after the deed was done.

Speaker 5:

I think we should be high enough that we're out of danger. Looks like the smoke is blowing down the hill and over the water. Like you said, At least they're out of the misery now.

Speaker 1:

Okay, so how many miles to the airport?

Speaker 5:

I have the map. Looks like four and a half five miles, yay back on the Trans Catalina Trail.

Speaker 3:

I swear I'm never going hiking after this Okay, scouts, let's hustle.

Speaker 5:

No stragglers. Yes, venture Master, watch your tone. What the oh my god, chase.

Speaker 4:

Back up, back up, keep him away. He was waiting to ambush this whole time and he still has the flag. I knew it. Told you, pierce, chase, chase, oh man, no, no, not you, chase, it's me, pierce your brother. You know me. Please, you can fight this. No, it's me, pierce your brother, you know me, please, you can fight this. No, he can't Shut up. Yes, he can damn it. I'm your brother, chase, okay.

Speaker 5:

He doesn't recognize you, pierce. He can't. He's just a thing. Now it's a new world, them or us. Remember Chase?

Speaker 6:

stop, please stop. What do we do? What can we do? Run, we have to do something. We can take him. No, no, no, he's got my foot, ruby, get off of me, ruby, we got you, we've got you.

Speaker 5:

Are you okay? Did he scratch you or anything? No, just got my boot. I stayed shattered. Pierce, you have the gun use it.

Speaker 6:

No, come on chase. You have to, I can't. He's my brother, that's not him anymore, do it that's we survived.

Speaker 2:

Boy scouts honor, if you like a good old zombie tale. I'm also going to be reviewing I'm alive by wayland productions in my review segment, which is the end of our show, and of course, the zombies sound much scarier.

Speaker 2:

Gerald have you studied the signs of FOMO? It means fear of missing out. I know what it means. Stop spying on me, jeez. We'll talk about this later.

Speaker 2:

You guys, I have a confession my fear of missing out is out of control. I still had three more episodes to go and it was really bugging me. I am so obsessed about binging so I stopped recording. I went back and finished the series and I have to tell you, wow, it is intense and it almost left me numb. Even though it's a show about middle school and high schoolers, it's an amazing story. I hope everybody listens to it. I'm so excited about it.

Speaker 2:

Anyway, on with the show, and now it's time for the main attraction. I have two reviews for you today that are perfect for summer listening. My first review covers we're Alive, an epic series that dropped its first episode in 2009. Weyland Productions is the GOAT of the podcast world, has never grown old, never becomes stale and continues to grow in popularity. I reviewed we're Alive Scout's Honor by Wayland Productions, a separate but theme-related podcast, in my what Are you Listening To segment. So if you took a mental vacation and that's okay if you did I suggest that you rewind and check it out.

Speaker 2:

Both Were Alive podcasts involve, quote-unquote, infected creatures that are destroying Los Angeles, and if you're scratching your head and saying, but wait, one of them took place on Catalina Island, please know that Catalina Island is actually part of Los Angeles County. It's 26 miles away from where I grew up along the coast of California, so I can attest to that personally. The last episode dropped in 2023, but rumors have it that Weyland Productions is crowdfunding to produce a new season. Or is it a new podcast? We're not sure. All I know is I hope the rumors are true.

Speaker 2:

Like Scout's Honor, the original we're Alive podcast sucks you into its imaginary world of humans and the infected zombie-like creatures, which I usually don't like, but I love them in this show. It's scary, humorous and sometimes heartbreaking, but not to the point that it causes you to lose even more faith in humanity. And because it takes you away from time and place, we're alive is the perfect escape from the tedium of long plane rides, delayed flights that make minutes seem like hours and, of course, without being glued to your phone Trigger. Warning these clips and the show contain a lot of foul language and violence.

Speaker 4:

Wow, hey, pass me another hot dog, would you?

Speaker 6:

Here After this one, we should probably put it out.

Speaker 5:

Get some rest. Nothing's gonna see us up here.

Speaker 6:

Starting to get chilly up here. How's he doing? Still out cold and still clutching his revolver? I would be too Kidding me. You can stop damn near anything with that pistol. Hey, I'm sorry about earlier you kidding me, you can stop damn near anything with that pistol. Hey, I'm sorry about earlier. How's that? If we hadn't have saved him, we wouldn't have been able to get any of his weapons.

Speaker 5:

How about we wouldn't have saved an old man's life?

Speaker 6:

Why does it it have to be about how useful someone is?

Speaker 5:

you hear that, hear what I thought I heard fucking gross man. Holy shit, that was close fucking thing scaled up the wall. Damn tore through my uniform a bit, but I'm all right all right, nice shot.

Speaker 6:

Angel didn't get any blood on me for a second there, it wasn't me even half dead, I can still bury him like the best.

Speaker 3:

fuck, yeah, gramps to the rescue. If you keep calling me that I'm gonna miss next time, hey, hey, take it easy. Just relax, lay back down.

Speaker 6:

How the hell did it get up here? I closed the ladder lock.

Speaker 3:

Move aside a sec, let me see it. Yep, it's one of them, smart ones. Smart ones, yeah, some of them are different. You gotta look out for those fuckers. One of them, I think, and maybe that one there lying there, trapped me in the bathroom. It just waited for me to come out, waited too long. I guess Must have lost interest after I passed out. Why didn't you just shoot him at the door? I mean, you're one hell of a shot. He had others with him. Seemed like he told the other ones what to do.

Speaker 4:

So how could you tell this one was smart? It looks like all the others.

Speaker 3:

Oh, it's not what's on their face or anything like that, but it's what they're wearing. You see that badge clipped to his belt. That's a level 3 ID for Radon Labs. Must have been pretty damn smart to get that badge. So what you're saying is I'm guessing, but it seems to me that the smarter you are in life, the smarter you are in death too. I mean. Well, you know what I mean. How'd you figure all that out? I was in that room for a pretty long time. They keep coming. Hurry, let's go Run.

Speaker 4:

I heard it again. I think we're being watched.

Speaker 5:

Follow me, stay close God.

Speaker 3:

Life is so short.

Speaker 7:

It keeps getting shorter over time, and it doesn't get any easier.

Speaker 3:

I do not like the look of this place.

Speaker 1:

Prim's one of the largest rogue encampments in all the Red Zone.

Speaker 6:

Only the wrong sort of people know how to get here.

Speaker 3:

Stop her. All guards at the doors. No one leaves unless I say and I mean no one.

Speaker 5:

Our lives are both at stake here. Keep going, they'll catch up to us if we stop Now. More.

Speaker 3:

It's coming from the tree line. Oh man, you got no idea what's coming next. Make every shot count, Please. You can't do this.

Speaker 2:

You're in prim and the house always wins. My second review for today is you Probably Think this Story Is about you, which brings to light that the best and the worst of humanity coexist on the same emotional plane. It's neither funny, lighthearted or filled with snark. It's simply one woman's experience with a poser, a charmer and a very handsome cad. It's a real story by a real 40-year-old woman named Brittany, who was compelled to pursue a love story, became involved in a whirlwind romance that quickly turned into a maelstrom of deceit for her, her family and her friends. I have a lot of empathy for Brittany. It's a girlfriend story by a down-to-earth woman who isn't incredibly beautiful, charming or funny. So what is the attraction? Brittany is down-to-earth and real. I promise that she'll remind you of someone you know, maybe even yourself.

Speaker 7:

This is the true story of my life. I changed some names and details to protect the innocent. It is marked, explicit Proceed with caution. I wanted the red flags to burn. I didn't want them to be real. I wanted him to be real, I wanted the love to be real and I wanted to gaslight myself into the love story that I always wanted. You probably think this story is about you. I'm Brittany Ard and this story is mine.

Speaker 7:

After sleeping with him all night and the cuddling and waking up to his sweet smile, I put my concerns to the back of my head. So we had just had sex. I'm in bed naked and he had gotten up to get in the shower. He was getting ready so I could take him to the airport. He was leaving that morning to fly to Arizona for his son's football game and he had left his phone on the nightstand on his side of the bed, face up.

Speaker 7:

His phone buzzed a few times. It was a little weird because he never left his phone anywhere or out, and I looked over at his phone. I didn't touch it, but there was a Bumble notification phone. I didn't touch it, but there was a Bumble notification. I was like, oh, they're probably trying to get him to renew his subscription or get back on the dating apps. I didn't have any reason to think that he was cheating or that there was somebody else that he was talking to. As I continued to search, there were all these articles about his son, where she was quoted very much alive alive. Each of the women that I've talked to has their own version of his story on how his ex-wife died, if she even died at all.

Speaker 1:

I worked with people living with a specific illness, and so that's what I've done for about 15 years now, and he said that his son's mother, so his ex-wife also had that illness and so she had committed suicide because of her diagnosis.

Speaker 6:

She had gotten in a car crash and died in Hawaii, and his son was in Hawaii alone, basically.

Speaker 5:

He was in the Middle East and then he received a phone call that his ex-wife had overdosed and his son was in the car with her.

Speaker 7:

Our conversations would be he has a brother and then no, he has a sister.

Speaker 6:

He had to get honorably discharged from the military and move back to Hawaii to take care of his son until he graduated they rushed them both to the hospital, and she was in in a coma for another two to three months she died this way and no, she died that way.

Speaker 7:

We all were like no, we know the real version of him and he said something about he felt guilty like that.

Speaker 1:

He didn't do enough to like help her and that's why one of the reasons she might commit suicide, and so he wanted to work with that population as well and now I'm finding out she's wonderfully alive. I have found out that she is still alive and well and not living with that illness.

Speaker 7:

Each one of them was convinced that it was true. None of us knew the real version of him, still don't. I've met 14 other women that have the same experience with Canaan as mine.

Speaker 2:

If you want to know how this ends, listen to. You Probably Think this Story Is About you. That's a wrap on another episode, the last episode for our summer series. I have to say, guys, I had a blast bringing this show to you, and I do every week. We will be back next Tuesday, same time, same channel. In the meantime, please follow our podcast and give us a five-star rating. As I've mentioned before, it means the world to us.

Speaker 2:

Love you guys. One Good Thing, media, is brought to you by our host and creator, gerald Spear, all things technical are by David Dodd and our announcer is Robert Spear.

Speaker 1:

Our theme song for Season 2 is Force by HGST.
